Wound Care

Sometimes it happens that the cat gets injured or has wounds from a surgery that you need to take care of. If the cat has a large wound, deep wound, a wound with rough edges, an infected wound or a wound that does not stop bleeding, you should go to the vet. But smaller wounds can often be cared for at home. Be sure to use clean hands and tools when handling wounds and injuries. On this page you will find, among other things, wound spray, germicidal spray, bandages, cotton swabs and first aid kits for cats.

There are several wound care products you can use so that you can manage wounds in the best way for optimal healing. It is important that wounds are kept clean so as to prevent bacterial growth that can slow down healing and lead to infection, which also makes wounds more difficult to heal. To do this, one can use a wound spray, chlorhex spray or saline. At Petster you will find wound sprays from Fyra Ess and Radicin (Trikem). If the cat has a wound that is bandaged or covered, you can use different anti-chewing and anti-lick sprays that keep the cat from biting and licking the bandage or the compress. A bitter spray can be sprayed onto the bandage which gives a bitter taste in the mouth that is not appreciated by cats, keeping them from repeating biting and chewing on bandages.

Another way to keep the cat away from wounds and injuries, perhaps after surgery, is by means of a neck collar. There are different variations of neck collars for cats, a popular variant is the inflatable collar. It is a soft neck collar that blows up and is placed around the cat's neck. This prevents the cat, in the same way as a plastic collar obtained from the veterinarian, from accessing surgical scars and wounds. It can also prevent the cat from biting and tearing up bandages. Sometimes the cat has a wound that must not be covered, and then a neck collar is great to stop the cat from licking the wound. If the wound is disturbed too much during healing, it may heal more slowly, and if the cat may accidentally tear off stitches it may also heal slowly.

Other good things you should have at home if an accident occurs are bandages, thermometers, and stypric powders for nail trimming. With a digital thermometer for cats and small pets, you can easily take the temperature and see when it deviates and the cat has a fever. This is always good to do when the cat seems mellow or unusually tired. To know when the cat has a fever you need to know what the normal temperature is. So take the temp on the cat when it is energic and healthy for a few days in a row - then you can more easily see when the temperature deviates from normal. Are you looking for a complete first aid kit for cat then you can find it here at Petster. The kit includes bandages, bandage scissors, tape, gloves, band-aids, heat blankets, tick removers and more practical tools.
