Pony Rugs – Find the Right Rug for Your Pony All Year Round

Looking for a pony rug that really fits? Here we guide you through types, sizes and clever features – so that your pony gets the right protection in all weather. At Petster we have a wide, carefully selected range and if you order before 1 pm we dispatch the same working day.

Why does a pony need a rug?

  • Weather & comfort: Protects against rain, wind and cold – especially for clipped or cold-natured ponies.
  • Summer & insects: Fly and sweet itch rugs reduce irritation and protect sensitive skin.
  • After exercise: Cooler rugs help the pony dry quietly and evenly.
  • Hygiene & rubbing: The right fit prevents rubbing and keeps the coat cleaner.

Different types of pony rugs

Turnout / Rain Rugs

Waterproof and breathable rugs for field use. Choose unlined (0 g) in mild weather or lightweight/medium fill when the temperature drops. A neck cover provides extra protection in wind and cold.

Winter Rugs

For cold periods. Common fill weights for ponies: 100–400 g. Layering (liner) makes it easy to fine-tune warmth without changing the whole rug.

Stable Rugs

For indoor use – provides even warmth in the stable and works as a mid-layer under the turnout rug when it gets really cold.

Cooler Rugs

Wicks moisture away after exercise. Most commonly in fleece or technical jersey fabric that breathes well.

Fly & Sweet Itch Rugs

For the summer season. Fly rugs have an open fit and UV protection; sweet itch rugs are more closely fitting and also protect the belly/tail area for sensitive individuals.

How to choose the right size

Measure the pony from point A (centre of the chest at the front) to point B (centre of the tail base). Compare with the size chart. The rug should lie straight across the back and finish at the tail base.

Frequently asked questions about pony rugs

Which rug is best in winter?
200–300 g is often enough for most ponies – add a liner or choose 400 g in severe cold.
How do I know if my pony is cold?
Feel behind the shoulder and at the withers – the skin should feel lukewarm and dry. Shivering and cold skin are signs that the warmth is insufficient.
Can I use the same rug all year round?
A 0 g turnout rug plus 100–300 g liners covers most needs. In summer many switch to a fly or sweet itch rug.
How often do I wash the rug?
As needed and at least once per season. Follow the washing instructions.
