Horse shampoo and conditioner
Sometimes you may need to wash or rinse your horse, e.g. before a competition when you want the horse to be clean and nice, or if the horse has become very sweaty after a training session. With the help of a little horse shampoo, a sponge and water, you can get your dirty horse shiny clean. In addition to regular horse shampoos, there are also many special shampoos such as anti dandruff shampoo, silver shampoo and antibacterial shampoo.
Conditioner can help sort out tangles in the mane and tail. In addition, horse conditioner is also often dirt-repellent and moisturizing. Some conditioners are rinsed out immediately while others should be left in for a few minutes before rinsing out. Find the right shampoo and conditioner for your horse here at Petster!
How to shower your horse:
- First rinse the horse so that the coat gets wet.
- Mix shampoo and water in a bucket. Then dip a sponge in the mixture and rub the shampoo into the horse's fur. Start from the top and work your way down. Avoid the horse's head so as not to risk getting shampoo in the horse's eyes.
- You clean the tail by dipping it in a bucket of water and shampoo, and rubbing away the dirt.
- Remove the shampoo foam with the sweat scraper. During fur shedding times, you can use a sweat scraper with teeth to also remove loose fur.
- Rinse the horse thoroughly, and preferably with lukewarm water. Make sure there are no shampoo residues left in the coat - it can irritate the skin and cause itching.
- Wash the horse's head with a washcloth and water. A soft towel can be great for washing sensitive areas such as around the muzzle and eyes.
- Drain excess water with the sweat scraper, this means that the horse dries much faster. Squeeze water out of tail and man.
- Feel free to use a sweat blanket so that the horse dries faster and does not freeze.
Remember that you wash away fats and oils from the coat if you use shampoo. The fats in the coat help the horse to keep warm, and during colder seasons the horse may need a slightly thicker blanket in the first days after showering. The fats are also what makes the horse's fur shiny, the fur therefore looks the best one to two days after washing!
