How to use a muzzle on my dog?

A muzzle can be a good aid when you get the dog used to other dogs; Perhaps you have acquired a new dog and want to introduce it to other animals in the home. Muzzles are also great during clinic visits and leash training. With a muzzle you can bring the dog to the vet and reduce the risk that someone gets bitten during clinical examinations when the dog is scared or stressed. A dog may not always react as you are used to when it is in a new situation and then it is good to be prepared. A dog that is also sick or injured can be even more stressed and then there is a risk that the dog bites if the vet touches and squeezes where the dog is sore. The muzzle is a good tool also when the dog has bandages, plaster or an compress over an injury and you do not want the dog to chew on or tear off wound compresses and other - perhaps in the car home from the animal hospital.

Muzzles can be used when a dog is to be introduced to other dogs or a pack of dogs. You can use the muzzle and a leash, or let the dog loose with the muzzle on. In this way you can have a little extra control and reduce the risk of injury. With the muzzle on, the dog cannot bite, and some models allow the dog to drink water and eat their feed with the muzzle on. Remember to never put the muzzle on too tight, or to use it for too long. It is important that the dog can open the mouth properly in a muzzle that is on for more than a few minutes because dogs need to be able to hack to regulate their temperature. We also have special-purpose muzzles for breeds with short snouts or flat faces. Find muzzles for French Bulldog and English Bulldog - also for puppies of these breeds.

When to use special leashes and harnesses

On this page at Petster you will also find special leashes and harnesses. Some examples are headcollar-harnesses from Halti, pulling belt or pulling harness from Hurtta, PetSafe Easy Walk anti-pull harness / leash, Ruffwear's jogging leash and other special dog accessories. If you like outdoor life and being outdoors, Hurtta and Ruffwear have good harnesses and leashes that are made for an active life with the dog. In Ruffwear's range there is also Omnijore Joring System which is a system with harness and leash / attachment for skiing with dog or ice skating with dog. Take the dog out into the ski track or ski slope with this smart attachment system. Another good attachment system from Ruffwear that you also find at Petster is Knot-A-Hitch which can be used for camping, travel, beach visits and other activities. With Knot-A-Hitch you can attach the dog to for instance two trees or poles and let it be on a leash but still have freedom of movement. Attach it to the caravan, RV or motorhome and to a nearby tree or other fixed object and let the dog walk between these places himself. In this way you can let the dog be outdoors in a free way without the risk of it running away.
