Why is hoof care so important?
The hoof is an incredibly important part of the horse's musculoskeletal system and for the horse to be able to be healthy and move optimally. If the hoof is damaged or in some way does not work optimally, it can have major consequences for the horse's musculoskeletal system and its movement patterns. A non-functioning hoof can lead to a number of different problems such as stress and strains in muscles and lameness, which are the most common reasons for the need for veterinary care! No hoof, no horse!
Daily hoof care
The daily hoof care is important to prevent and detect any problems in the hoof. Checking and picking the hooves regularly can prevent many problems in the long term, such as pressure from wedged stones and thrush. Regular hoof care also makes it easier for you to see and detect any changes in the hoof, and can start treating and fixing any problems in time! Do not skip the hoof care!
Dry hooves and hoof cracks are a common problem, and can also be treated and prevented in the long term through regular hoof care, lubrication and re-greasing of the hooves!
Treatment of the hoof
If an injury or issue occurs, there are a lot of products to facilitate the treatment of various hoof problems. Among other things, bandage protection that protects a hoof wrap from moisture and dirt, and keeps it in place longer, water boots to soak and soften the hoof e.g. before a farrier visit, as well as hoof shoes that protect wraps and keep treatment fluid next to the hoof.
Supplements for better hoof quality
If the horse has poor hoof quality, supplements can be a good idea. For the growth of the hoof to function optimally, the whole horse's body needs to be in good balance. Examples of supplements that can improve hoof quality are biotin, but also sulfur-rich supplements such as MSM and methionine, as well as manganese and zinc are linked to hoof health.
Always follow the dosage instructions when giving your horse supplements!
