• Activon honey ointment
• Nonwoven compresses
• Upholstery wadding
• Vetrap
• Tensoplast adhesive tape
• Disposable gloves
Treatment:
- Before the treatment, the crusts should be removed, as bacteria and fungi collect under them. This can be done by applying an emollient ointment and leaving it on for 20-60 minutes. After that, the crusts should come off easily. Do not tear them off, as this can cause wounds.
- The hair around the wound should also be cut before the treatment, as the hairs can otherwise irritate the wound.
- Treatment can now begin by applying chlorhexidine, which is an antiseptic. Leave on for up to 20 minutes, then rinse and dry with a clean towel.
- Clean the area with alcohol gel and compress.
- Apply liberally with Mannuka honey salve, which speeds up healing. Use nonwoven compress to cover the ointment. As the nonwoven compresses have a silky surface, they do not stick to the wound.
- Then start bandaging with cotton wool and then wrap over vetrap. Note! As vetrap is an elastic and adhesive wrap, they must not be tightened to avoid damage to the tendons.
- Finally, tensoplastic adhesive tape is taped over the hairband, hoof and bandage for extra attachment. Use with care as this wrap is very strong and elastic. It must not be placed over the vertebral joint, crown joint or hoof joint.
If the bandage is kept dry and clean, the bandage can stay on for up to 3 days. Repeat the procedure if mold remains or returns.
