Dog nail care and paw care is important for the dog's health. When you regularly handle the paws and cut the nail, you reduce the risk of injury. Nails that are not properly managed can grow too long and risk painful nail fractures and injuries. If the nail capsule becomes damaged, you often need to go to the vet. Damaged nails can be avoided if you regularly cut the nails on the dog. Caring for dog nails is not always easy as many dogs do not have nail clipping as their favorite activity. But there are many tricks you can try to make the clipping easier and more comfortable for the dog.

One tip is to take the opportunity to clip when the dog is calm and maybe resting or sleeping. If you have the opportunity to start practicing nail cutting when the dog is a puppy, you should do so. Then you can cut a little, tiny bit every time but often to get the puppy used to it. The puppy can sit, lie, stand or lie on his back depending on what you prefer. If you have a very hard time keeping your dog calm, you can wrap it in a blanket to get better control. Hold tight but not too tight on the dog's paw or legs. Should the foreleg nails be cut, it may be good to have an assistant - the assistant can hold the dog's legs behind the elbow so that the leg is stretched out and not pulled back. Praise lots and maybe give a reward in the form of tasty dog treats when the puppy or dog has been good.

If the dog is really scared and difficult when it is time to cut the nails, you can try using a muzzle or neck collar. With a muzzle, the dog can be easier to handle and you do not have to worry about being bitten. Keep in mind that you yourself need to be calm and careful, but still determined, so that the dog does not become (more) worried or stressed. Praise and talk calmly and kindly to the dog. Don't forget to cut the spurs. If you would like to try a muzzle, you can find many different variants here at Petster.

Paw care is another part of the regular dog care. Paw care can be to ensure that the paws are not damaged, cracked and dry, and to trim the fur between the pads. Here we have collected softening and nourishing ointments for paws and scissors to trim the coat. If you are out walking with the dog in the winter, or if your dog is active during the winter months as a sled dog, hunting dog or other activities, then paw wax can be good for the paws. With paw wax you prevent ice formation between the paw pads.
