MSM, methylsulfonylmethane, is incredibly important for cell formation. A shortage of this can easily occur in the feed state when the horse's access to fresh grass is limited, as well as during hard training.

Description

Article no.: GIB-700040

MSM-Methylsulfonylmethane is a natural sulfur-based essential substance found only in fresh crops. The substance of the substance is created in the seas where it is released in gaseous form and rises in the atmosphere. The influence of ozone and UV light transforms it into DMSO2 (MSM) which falls down with rainwater. For horses, grass is the most important source.

MSM is an essential part of the formation of new cells, and thus the maintenance and formation of all components of the body. Everything from connective tissue and tendons to the coat is based on the fact that there is a sufficient amount of MSM in the body. It is also an important building block in the body's production of amino acids, proteins, enzymes and hormones.

The function of MSM in the cell is to make its cell wall more permeable for the exchange of nutrients and slag products. Thus, this is an important part of what the horse can perform. In case of MSM deficiency, the horse gets lower lactic acid threshold and can perform less. The recovery of the muscles also takes longer, which is evident in longer warm-up times with a stiffer and more reluctant horse.

Modern animal husbandry with shorter grazing and outdoor living, more gravel pastures and year-round riding, has in many cases proven to cause MSM deficiency in the feed state. Hay silage, which is MSM-poor, is also a reason for this.

How can you know that your horse is suffering from a lack of MSM? The easiest way is to try giving MSM supplements for a week to see if you feel that your horse is in need of shorter warm-ups, becomes smoother and softer, and becomes more willing to work. Then you know that your horse has a lack of MSM. Studies have shown that there are an incredible number of horses suffering from deficiency that are never treated.

One of the serious consequences for horses of MSM deficiency is that stiff muscles cannot relieve the joints. Since we work with horse motivational training, such as jumping, there is a great risk that the horse will gladly jump even though the muscles are not sufficiently flexible and prepared. Impact in landings and turns will then result in a severe shock to the joint cartilage, which can repeatedly damage the joint.

The need for MSM supplements varies during the year and is largely influenced by the horse's access to fresh grass and of course the amount of training. All supplements are directly dependent on supply and demand. Less natural access and more exercise (consumption) increase the need for all nutrients.
